The script reader's role is to read the script, write a logline, summarize the story and comment on the overall quality of the writing material. At a typical film company, development executives are too busy to sift through script submissions and personally read each script. The script reader takes charge in finding the diamond in the rough by reading the scripts, analyzing them and writing script coverage reports.
The script that receives a project/writer rating of "Consider" or "Recommend" will garner the attention of the development executive. Script coverage report gives the executive a "snapshot" of the overall viability of a screenplay. With that being said, a screenplay reader's role is to help identify the good scripts from a stack of submissions. This process of evaluating screenplays allows the executive to save time and view only the scripts that have been carefully selected by the script reader.
